Blue butterfly: Lampides boeticus

Symptoms of damage 

  • Flat slug like green larva bores into buds, flowers and green pods and feeds inside the developing grains
  • Presence of regular, big, circular borehole on the flowers and pods.
  • Black ants hovering around the plants

Identification of the pest

  • Eggs:
  • Round, sculptured, laid singly on flower buds, tender pods, shoots and leaves.
  • Egg period 3 – 4 days.
  • Larva – * Flat, slug like, green or yellowish green, red coloured mid stripe and few hairs.
                  * Larval period 8 – 10 days.
                  * Prepupal stage - 2 – 3 days.
  • Adult -
    • Blue butterfly, having five black spots on the dorsal surface of the hind wing and two black spots on the ventral surface.
    • Wings are blue on upper side and grey on lower side.
  •  

    Management

    Spray any one of the following insectcides (Spray fluid 500 l/ha)

    • Emamectin benzoate 5%SG 220 g/ha
    • Indoxacarb 15.8%SC 333 ml/ha
    • NSKE 5% twice followed by triazophos 0.05%
    • Neem oil 2%
